VILLAGE MANOR RESIDENTS & STAFF TAKING PART IN WALK KANSAS
Lyman Hill, Village Manor resident, uses exercise equipment for his participation in Walk Kansas. The minutes that he uses the equipment are applied to his team’s goal in the program. |
The six teams at Village Manor consist of two to four residents plus staff members to make up a team of six. There are a total of 16 residents and 20 staff members participating in the program who will track minutes of physical activity.
“Village Manor residents and staff are participating in this program for some fun AND fitness,” said Village Manor Executive Director Amy Hoch Altwegg. “This is a way to stay active and participate in a fun, community activity,” she continued.
There will be some light, friendly competition among the teams at Village Manor, but the event is mostly a get-up-and-go type competition for themselves. Some residents are matched up with family members, some are with a staff team partner, and some residents can do it on their own. Some of the residents participating are in wheel chairs with family members assisting them. Folks are helping others so that they can participate in the program.
According to K-State Research and Extension, the goal for the Walk Kansas program is to provide encouragement to add or maintain health-promoting physical activity and reduce the risk of chronic illness. Besides participating in Walk Kansas, Village Manor has many other activities that keep the residents active day-to-day.
