The AbileneHigh School Volleyball Team held a Pink-Out Night to promote breast cancer awareness.  The funds raised were donated to Impact the Cure 2014 to help fund free mammography services for uninsured in Dickinson County.  Coach Mike Jantz is shown presenting the check to RaeLyn Swisher, Impact Sports & Fitness Director and Impact the Cure organizer.

New Release: Election Endorsement

Kansas Democrats Receive Endorsement from Major Union


The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division (BMWED) of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has officially endorsed Paul Davis, Jill Docking, Jean Schodorf, Jim Sherow​ and six other Democratic candidates in Kansas.

Freddie N. Simpson, Vice President at Large of the Teamsters Rail Conference and President of the BMWED, along with BMWED Director of Government Affairs, Charlie R. Hogue, presented the endorsements to Kenny Riffel, Chairman of the Democratic Party in Dickinson County.

“Paul, Jill, Jean, Perry, and all of our candidates are proven and dedicated public servants who will work to bring bi-partisan leadership and common sense back to Topeka and Kansas,” said Riffel.  “We proudly accept these endorsements on behalf of all Kansas Democrats and thank the BMWED/Teamsters for their support in this crucial election.”

Founded in 1903, the Teamsters currently represent 1.4 million members in 21 industrial divisions in both the private and public sectors.  The BMWED was founded in 1887 and is a member of the Teamsters Rail Conference which currently represents about 70,000 rail workers across the United States.

New Release: New Chief Nursing Officer

MEMORIAL ANNOUNCES CHIEF NURSING OFFICER


Brenda Moffitt, Advanced Practice Provider, joins Memorial Health System in Abilene as the Chief Nursing Officer.  

Memorial Health System in Abilene is pleased to announce that Brenda L. Moffitt, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and Board Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist, is joining the health system as the Chief Nursing Officer effective November 10.

Moffitt comes to Memorial Health System from Stormont-Vail Health Care in Topeka where she was working as the Director of Education and Organizational Development.  Moffitt received both her Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Wichita State University.

Moffitt has served as the Kansas State Board of Nursing President for the last three years.  She has been a member of the board since 2004 and has served on various committees. 

Moffitt currently volunteers as a Kansas Education Advocate. She has also served as a volunteer at the Stormont Vail HealthCare Birthplace where she worked with families and newborns.

News Release: MHS Volunteer Corp Cookbook


MHS VOLUNTEER CORPS COOKBOOK IS IN!

It’s never too early to start your holiday baking and much more! Find the perfect recipes in the Memorial Health System Volunteer Corps Cookbook that just arrived and is now available in Memorial Hospital’s Caring Hearts Gift Shop, just off the hospital lobby, 511 NE 10th St.

This very practical cookbook is a collection of recipes, including submissions from MHS volunteers, MHS employees, and 2014 Gold Medal Groovy Baking Contest contestants. The cookbook is dedicated to the many volunteers who give their time to Memorial Health System.  The cookbook retails for $9.99, and proceeds will be used by the MHS Volunteer Corps to support projects within Memorial Health System.

Eagle Communications supports free mammography services for uninsured in Dickinson County as a major sponsor of Impact the Cure and providing a free pancake breakfast to over 200 attendees and participants in the run/walk fundraiser.  The breakfast was free, but donations were accepted and donated to the event to help the cause.  Dennis Weese of Eagle Communications is shown presenting the donation to RaeLyn Swisher, Impact Sports & Fitness Director and Impact the Cure organizer.

The Solomon High School Volleyball Team members and Coaches Present a Donation to Impact the Cure

The Solomon High School Volleyball team members and coaches present a donation to Impact the Cure which provides free mammography services for uninsured in Dickinson County.

The Solomon High School Volleyball team members wanted to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer, and they wanted to make that difference locally.  They chose to support Impact the Cure, an event organized by Impact Sports and Fitness in Abilene that raises funds to provide free mammography services for uninsured in Dickinson County.  The team held a Pink Out night and collected donations for the cause.

When accepting the donation, RaeLyn Swisher, Impact the Cure organizer and Impact Sports and Fitness Manager, thanked the team and told them that their support does make a difference.  “Since we began raising funds for free mammography services for uninsured in October 2012, we have helped 57 women in this county.  Your support does make a difference to those around you.”

Morgan Clark, a senior setter on the team, presented the check along with her team mates, Coach Alex Paterson, and Assistant Coach Laressa Nordgren.

Mandy earned her Massage Therapist Certification in 2010 from Bellus Academy.  Since then she has worked in Salina gaining many hours of experience.

Cowboys Fall to McPherson

The Cowboys knew the easiest road to a playoff berth this season would need to include a victory over district foe McPherson.  After losing to the McPherson Bullpups Friday night, their road became much tougher.  Abilene was defeated by a score of 17-6  and was handed their first loss of the season, sending them to 6-1 on the season and 0-1 in district play.

On their first possession of the game, the Bullpups drove the ball down the field to the Abilene 1 yard-line.  The Cowboy defense held strong from their own 1 on three straight plays, forcing McPherson to attempt a field goal on 4th and goal.  McPherson kicker Nathan Nutter sent the ball flying through the goal posts to give the Bullpups the 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

After another offensive drive had put McPherson within Abilene’s own half of the field, senior safety Dalton Goodwin intercepted McPherson quarterback Kyler Kinnaman’s pass to shut down the Bullpups’ drive.  The Cowboys offense struggled again to get anything going on the ensuing drive and were forced to punt once again early in the second quarter.  McPherson took advantage of another failed offensive drive by the Cowboys as Kinnaman punched in a touchdown run from 10 yards out early in the second quarter.  The touchdown and PAT made the score 10-0 in favor of the Bullpups.

Junior quarterback Harley Hazlett was able to jumpstart the offense late in the second quarter with a 43 yard run around the right side of the line as he weaved his way down the field and was eventually knocked out of bounds at the 11 yard-line.  On 4th down from the 12 yard-line, Hazlett stepped back in the pocket and released a pass as he stepped up in the pocket that was intended for senior tight-end Zach Barbieri.  Barbieri came down with the catch for the touchdown, putting the Pokes on the scoreboard for the first time in the ball game.  After the failed PAT, the Cowboys trailed 10-6.

After a stop by the Cowboy defense, the ball was put back in the hands of the Cowboy offense.  Hazlett and the offense were given one more chance at a shot at the end-zone before halftime, but Hazlett’s deep pass down the field was intercepted by McPherson’s Kinnaman, bringing an end to the first half.

The second half became a defensive slug-fest.  McPherson’s offense was able to move the ball down the field to the Abilene 1 yard-line once again, but this time the defense allowed no points whatsoever.  Kinnaman attempted to sneak the ball across the goal-line, but an Abilene lineman batted the ball out of his hands to the ground.  The fumble was recovered by senior linebacker Jared Rimmel, giving possession back to the Cowboys.

Hazlett connected to Barbieri once again on a 25 yard hook up to move the Cowboys out of dangerous territory after being backed up against their own goal-line.  However, the Cowboys were not able to move the ball much further and were forced to punt once again.

A broken play from McPherson would be the nail in the coffin for the Cowboys undefeated season late in fourth quarter.  McPherson’s Kinnaman turned to hand the ball off to his runningback who ran to the wrong side.  Kinnaman took matters into his own hands and broke a tackle in the backfield and sped up the left sideline for a 36 yard touchdown run, permanently putting McPherson in the lead after the PAT, 17-6.

The loss will certainly be a devastating one for the Cowboys.  A victory over next week’s opponent, the Hays Indians, will be vital for the Cowboys’ playoff hopes to stay alive.
