“Thank You” To Our School Board Members
by Denise Guy
January 2015 is School Board Recognition Month, and USD
435 joins districts across Kansas saying thank you to the community leaders who
volunteer countless hours to our school systems.
We are fortunate to have seven individuals on our board
of education who are committed to an excellent education for every child in our
community. Our board members participate in training, read reports, research
education topics, and attend specialized professional development sessions,
staying on top of education issues and trends as they prepare for the many
decisions they must make during their tenure on the board. And, they do this
all on a volunteer basis!
School board members develop policies and make tough
decision that help shape the future of our education system. They bear
responsibility and oversight for our annual budget, for our students, employees
and buildings.
These advocates for our community and our children
preserve the very core of our democracy — public education! I am grateful to
have this opportunity to formally say “thank you” to our board members for
sharing their vision and leadership in directing student achievement, academic
programs, district funding and school facilities.
I encourage the entire community to thank a school board
member, not only this month but throughout the year. Our list of VIP board
members include:
Gregg Noel, Board President
Barb Brittan, Vice President
Mark Wilson
Debbie Barbur
Dr. Kari Porter-Murray
Randy Gassman
Jeff Bathurst
