City Names Daniel Shea as Community Development Director

The City of Abilene has named Daniel Shea to the position of Community Development Director, who will assume the duties of the position on July 13, 2015.

The City Manager received input from an interview committee comprised of various stakeholders and interests throughout the community that will interact often with the the Community Development Department in making the decision to hire Mr. Shea.

Daniel comes to the City of Abilene with experience in planning and zoning as well as economic development. He most recently served as the Executive Director to the Kingman County Economic Development Council where he promoted Kingman County as a viable location for businesses and industry.

“Daniel brings a level of experience that will serve the interests of the community and help make progress on some of our most daunting challenges,” says City Manager David Dillner. “He is excited about the opportunity and is ready to contribute to the community in ways that will no doubt be productive.”

Prior to that position, Daniel served as the Planning Director for the City of Bethel, Alaska, where he assisted with the development of the Bethel Coastal Management Plan, Economic Plan, and the City’s Comprehensive Plan. He also guided development within an industrial corridor and coordinated infrastructure development. Daniel has also held similar positions with the cities of Bloomfield and Noblesville, Indiana.

He earned a Master of Science degree in Urban Planning and a Bachelor of Science degree in Leisure Studies from Kansas State University.

Daniel is a member of the American Planning Association, the Kansas Planning Association, and the International City/County Management Association.

“The City is especially grateful to the citizens who participated in the interview process and all of the candidates who expressed interest in the position,” said City Manager David Dillner. “I am especially grateful and appreciative of Jennie Hiatt, Jeremy Stuck, and staff for their great work during this time of organizational transition.”
