Press Release: Learn and Grow Depot and Nutrition

LEARN & GROW DEPOT PROMOTES NUTRITION

AT THANKSGIVING

Learn & Grow Depot children, families, and staff learned about nutrition through activities during their Thanksgiving feast.
The staff members at Learn and Grow Depot Child Development Center are promoting nutrition this Thanksgiving season.

The childcare center received a grant from the Kansas State Department of Education’s Team Nutrition Program to promote nutrition to young children.  The Learn and Grow Depot staff chose to promote nutrition in conjunction with Thanksgiving activities.  The facility’s parents, families, and staff members were invited to attend a Thanksgiving Family, Fun and Fitness Feast.  Approximately 100 people attended the event.

Participants began the evening with a Tasting Challenge in which they tried two new food items.  This was followed by a My Plate Challenge which tasked each person to include something from each food group in their meal.

Physical games focusing on nutrition followed the meal.  Participants played Making Veggie Soup Obstacle Course, Shopping Bean Bag Race, and Nutritional Bingo.

Marie Malo, Learn and Grow Depot Director, stated, “We thought it would be fun to incorporate these nutritional activities into our Thanksgiving feast.  It is so important to teach good nutritional habits and start children eating healthy when they are young. Everyone had a fun time with the nutrition games, and they created great inter-generational interaction. We feel it was a successful way for both children and parents to learn about this important topic.”
