AHS Art student KATIE HOWIE created the original cover
design for the 2013-14 edition of “Home-Cooking—Dickinson
County Style, Capturing the Present and Remembering the Past” — a
collection of monthly recipes and stories that originally appeared in the
Abilene Reflector Chronicle from October 2013 to September 2014.
MORGAN RUTTER, PAYTON SCHMIDT
& SHANNON YOUNG, with direction and guidance from Abilene High School business
instructor DAWN JAMES, were in charge of the
design and publication of the booklet. The students were responsible for the
text layout, design, and production of the 13th edition of the
annual cookbook that includes a wide variety of recipes from area cooks.
According to Meta Newell
West, who has written the original columns for the last 13 years, Mrs. James
and her students have been in charge of the booklet for 12 of those 13 editions
and have gone “above and beyond” in putting together a publication that helps
capture the history of culinary arts in the county. “Putting together a
cookbooks is a complicated project and literally takes hours and hours of
planning and work. It’s always fun to
see what they come up with in terms of layout and graphics, and it’s also
encouraging to see students involved in projects that help the community.”
All proceeds from the
booklet go directly to the Dickinson County Heritage Center and help preserve
local history. To order a booklet,

Congratulations on a job well done!
